conference in Bonanza Nicaragua

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to let you know that the regional conference in Bonanaza was a BLAST!

We had three days of Spirit FILLED activity!  The first night not everyone was there, but the second and third nights...wow!  Powerful.

The second night, I believe we had about 18 people accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour.  Sunday night, easily double that amount did the same.  For a town the size of Bonanza that is a miracle.

Bonanza is a small mining town about midway between the capital city of Managua and where we live in Puerto Cabezas.  It is slightly off of the road.  The road passing from Managua to Puerto Cabezas goes through Rosita, which is about an hour away (by bus) from Bonanza.  There are only 13,000 people living there, and only ONE Church of God building (if you can call it THAT...a building I mean).

I felt like I had stepped into the past while I was there.  If anyone has ever seen a "mining camp" in the westerns on TV and in the movies, you can easily visualize the atmosphere in this little town.  We ALL felt very blessed to be a part of the convention.  Salvation!

Things in Puerto Cabezas are the same, no new news, and thank GOD for THAT.  Ministry continues, and lives are being changed and rescued by Jesus Christ every day.

All is currently well in Puerto Cabezas

Hi Folks,

I want to thank everyone for the prayers we have received!  We have been very blessed to feel the warmth of these prayers.

The situation here has been "status quo" for the last week or so.  There have been a few manifestations and blockades, but NO violence.  I am very grateful for that, of course.

The ministry here has been continuing in the abscense of malfeaseance.  I am still teaching English classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.  We are still assisting with the reading/writing classes for the people that live and work at the dump on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.  We are still showing the "Jesus Movie" at every opportunity (it is in the Miskito language, and is VERY WELL received).

I am still preaching and teaching and attending baptisms, and other church services.  In short, life continues here on the beleagured Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua, and more importantly MINISTRY continues here in La Miskitia, Nicaragua.

This is attributable to YOUR prayers, and support!!!  Thank you!

Anyone wishing to donate funds to alleviate our unbudgeted expenses, due to the violence here in Nicaragua, please send your tax-deductible donations to:

or, as always you can donate to us through the Church of God, by referencing our project number:  065-0497

Something NEW in our search for continuing support has occurred.  We have partnered with Rusty and Joy Postell in San Antonio, TX in a venture they brought to our attention.  It is called OurGV rewards.

In short it is a "discount store", where you and your family may make purchases from major retailers, at a discounted rate.  In addition to your savings, our ministry has a portion of your purchase set aside for our use.  PLEASE CLICK ON THE LINK AT THE BOTTOM OF OUR WEBPAGE TO USE THIS NEW SERVICE. www.casadeservicio.org

We are frankly sceptical that it will "prove out".  We pray that through your purchases you will show me to be wrong.

In His service, always!

an unexpected expense

Hi Folks,

Carolyn and I have found it necessary to purchase an airline ticket for her, unexpectedly.  If God touches anyone's heart to help us with this expense we would be most appreciative.

Carolyn is going to the United States for awhile, until the political situation here in Puerto Cabezas quiets down.  I feel much better knowing that she is safe, and working hard for our missions success in the United States.

As long I can, I will continue in service here in Puerto Cabezas.  I don't expect any further violence here, and none at all to be directed towards me...or I would maybe be on a plane also (grin).  God has called us to this area, not as martyrs, but as missionaries (we believe).

The situation is still very volatile here in Nicaragua and I will continue to monitor and exchange information about the events here as they unfold.  I strive very hard to be completely nonpolitical, as most of you know, when it comes to the internal politics of this area.  I will stay out of it, politically.

I covet your prayers for our adopted city (Bilwi) as I continue in service here.

from the Miami Herald

The following is from the Miami Herald, and is about Puerto Cabezas and the situation here (Bilwi is the Miskito name for Puerto Cabezas).

NICARAGUA

Violence erupts in Nicaraguan indigenous zone

Violence spread in an autonomous region of Nicaragua as Sandinista efforts to halt elections continued.

Special to The Miami Herald

Sandinista efforts to cancel the upcoming municipal elections in parts of Nicaragua's hurricane ravaged North Atlantic Autonomous Region sparked violence and rioting Friday in the indigenous community of Bilwi, where opposition leaders claim the government of President Daniel Ortega is trying to establish a dictatorship by eliminating their right to elect local officials.

''The situation is chaotic and dangerous, and I think it is going to get even hotter,'' anti-Sandinista indigenous leader Osorno ''Comandante Blas'' Coleman, said in a phone interview from Bilwi. ``The authorities have to act prudent right now.''

One person was shot dead and another was in critical condition Friday. Several others were injured by rocks shot from slingshots as the regional Sandinista-ally group, YATAMA, clashed with a much larger opposition group that met with a delegation of liberal lawmakers who traveled to the coast to investigate the situation.

The three visiting lawmakers were initially held hostage on their plane, which was surrounded by some 80 YATAMA supporters. A larger group of several thousand anti-Sandinista indigenous people then came to the lawmakers' rescue, clashing with the YATAMA group.

FLIGHTS CANCELED

The rioting then spread as anti-Sandinista protesters took over the YATAMA-controlled mayor's office, looting the building and breaking windows, while another group burned two government vehicles in the street. All national flights to and from the regional airport were canceled for the second time in a week.

Coleman claims that the gunshots came from the YATAMA group headed by Brooklyn Rivera, a former anti-Sandinista militant who formed a controversial electoral alliance with Ortega in exchange for a seat in the National Assembly. Rivera, meanwhile, claims the violence and rioting were incited by the three visiting Liberal Party lawmakers, including former contra militant Enrique Quiñónez, against whom the Sandinistas filed a criminal accusation Friday afternoon.

''The population on the coast doesn't have guns; it was the Liberals who went there and got the people drunk and drugged and gave them weapons, which they fired indiscriminately, killing one of their own,'' Rivera told The Miami Herald.

The National Police sent a high-level delegation from Managua out to the Caribbean coast by helicopter to investigate.

AT ISSUE

At the center of the controversy is the Sandinistas' efforts to cancel the upcoming November elections in three municipalities under the argument that the conditions for voting don't exist due to damage caused by last September's Hurricane Felix, a Category 5 storm that destroyed much of the region, known by the Spanish acronym RAAN, including school houses used for voting.

Last week, Ortega called for a suspension of the elections in the municipalities of Bilwi, Waspam and Prinzapolka -- the same three municipalities controlled by the Sandinistas and their YATAMA ally.

The opposition claims the Sandinistas' real motive is to hold onto power by avoiding elections they fear they will lose. Critics claim efforts to suspend the vote is another example of the Sandinista government politicizing the hurricane disaster.

Bernicia Sanders, a leader of an indigenous women's group from Bilwi, traveled to Managua last week to ask opposition political parties for support in defending the region's right to hold elections. ''We know our rights,'' she said. ``And we need to elect our own leaders.''

Coleman, a former anti-Sandinista militant leader from the 1980s, says that canceling the elections would be nothing short of canceling democracy. ''If they suspend the elections, we will have a dictatorship,'' he said.

The "huelga" (strike) has ended...sort of.

Hi Folks,

Those of you that have expressed interest and have prayed for our situation here in Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, we want to say THANK YOU.

The strike has ended, sort of...grin!  The strikers have moved to the outside of town, and are blocking the road where it splits between Waspam and Managua.  There still is only the ONE ROAD out of here.  But for now, the violence is over, and the planes ARE flying (the airport has reopened).  So for now, we are back to normal.

We had a very nice baptism ceremony yesterday for a local church in the San Judas barrio.  We went down to the river at Tuapi.  What a blessed event that was.

We wish you ALL could have been HERE for it.

The "huelga"

Hi Folks,

So far the "huelga", or "strike" has cost at least two people their lives, one of them eight years old.

Although our house is on the street where the main activity is taking place, we appear to be in no danger.  Life is going on as usual for the folks here that AREN'T involved in the demonstration (like us).  Construction workers are still plying their trade, taxi drivers are still picking up fares, clothes are still being washed and hung out to dry, etc.

We, the people living in this neighborhood, are still conducting our daily business.  We have to insure that we have adequate supplies (we do), and that we are behind locked gates (we are), and that we aren't taking any part in the "huelga" (we aren't).

We are safe, thanks to your prayers and further thanks to the fact that the "huelgistas" are only targeting specific places, the airport, the bodega, and the mayors office, for instance.

     We are safe.
And all is well in Puerto Cabezas.

We expect the "huelga" to be over on Monday.  We are continuing life normally.  We have a baptism planned for tomorrow at Tuapi river.

Please keep the city of Puerto Cabezas in your prayers as we continue to minister to the Indians here.  Please keep the country of Nicaragua in your prayer life as the new Sandinista government takes matter more and more into their hands.  Please keep our neighborhood in your prayers as we deal with the exhibition of angry people acting under political motivations.  Please keep US in your prayers as we continue to minister to, and help to educate the Miskitio Indians.

We just received word this morning that the strike is over, the government has reached an agreement with the strikers.  THANK GOD!

On another note, we have some very good friends of ours that are going through an EXTREME trial right now.  Please keep them in prayer, they need it badly.

Hi Folks,

Everything is okay so far here in Puerto Cabezas.  The blockade is still in effect, but there is no danger.  Keep us in your prayers.

The convention is over.

Hi Folks,

The Convention is over in Puerto now. The chairs have been returned to their respective places, the various pastors have resumed their duties in their own localities and all of us here in Puerto can look back on a WONDERFUL convention.

As of yesterday, there has been a "manifestation" (a protest) here in Puerto Cabezas. The road (there's only ONE) into Puerto has been blocked, the airport has been shut down, and the ferry outside of town has been taken over.

There is no danger at this time, but we are keeping an eye on the situation. Please keep us, and the city in prayer.
